How to Cultivate Connection With Your Child When You’re Away

Sometimes, parents, have work conferences, family obligations, or even the occasional getaway, and children stay behind at home or with a trusted friend or family member. These experiences for your child can be an opportunity to create a special connection in meaningful ways. Here are a few unique ideas you can use to cultivate this connection with your child when you’re away from home.

Connect Through Comfort Objects

A favorite ‘lovie’ or stuffie can be one of the best tools to help your child feel closer to you. Many children have a special toy or favorite object that brings them comfort and joy. If your child isn’t yet attached to a snuggly toy, consider making a special gift of one. When you’re preparing for a brief time away, make sure they have this object available nearby to have with them. Holding and snuggling the stuffed animal can remind your child of your love and constant affection.

Connect With Your Face and Voice

Do you know how much you smile when flipping through photos of your children on your phone when you’re away? Your child might also like looking at a picture of the two of you together or a photo of the whole family. Give your child the joy of a photo of their own to keep nearby. Of course, connecting with a phone call or through a video chat is even more special if possible. Remember that your face and voice are as precious to your child as theirs are to you!

Connect Through Ritual

Use your child’s creativity to build a daily ritual that you can both use to feel connected while you’re apart. A rhyme or song, accompanied by a secret handshake, mini-dance, or a big hug can be used when you say goodbye and when you reunite. This special routine can also provide a moment of connection after a busy day for both of you.

Connect Through Physical Touch

Who doesn’t love a big hug from the ones they love? Children are especially comforted by the warmth and energy of physical touch. Setting aside time for snuggles before heading out the door can help your child feel connected to you all day long. While you’re cuddling, you can talk to them about the plan for the day, ask about how they’re feeling, and answer any questions they may have for you. Once you’ve returned, take a few minutes to reconnect with your child with a hug and a kiss. You’ll create warm, positive memories together, and your touch will reassure them of your presence.

Connect Through a Small Surprise

Do you remember the pleasure of finding a sweet or encouraging note from a parent in your lunch box on a school day? You can give your child the same delight by leaving surprise notes or tiny gifts for them while you are away. Small surprises like this can be especially encouraging when you are apart for a longer time, such as if you’re headed on an extended trip. The message can be a simple one—in this case, it is truly the thought that counts.
