Are we there yet?

Parents are all too familiar with the famous child phrase—especially when it comes to longer car rides. But even shorter car rides these days can seem like long ones for a new generation of tech-savvy learners. However, in the age of fast technology advancements, mobile devices can be both a blessing and a curse for keeping little ones entertained in the car.

So, how can you keep kids entertained in the car without a meltdown or an overuse of screen time? Whether you are taking an extended family vacation or exploring your local surroundings, here are a few creative ways to keep your little ones engaged and happy on the drive.

Activity Packs

As you’re planning and packing for your journey, consider putting together some activity packs for your child to play with on the drive. Whether it’s a Ziploc bag with LEGOs, a shoebox with crayons and coloring sheets, or a small tote with car-friendly crafts, never underestimate the ways in which children can be entertained for hours with fun S.T.E.A.M. learning activities.

Audiobooks

Kids love books, so a car ride shouldn’t create a barrier to a great storytime, right? Check out all the preschool-friendly audiobooks available to listen to together or via headphones for your little ones. And…you can always go old school, and toss in a few physical books for your child to look at or read as a family while riding along.

Family Travel Games

For a good unplugged activity that brings the whole family together on your drive, try playing some good old-fashioned family travel games. Whether it’s “I Spy,” “The Alphabet Game,” “20 Questions,” or searching for U.S. license plates, you can create lifetime family memories and laugh together without any prep or materials.

Sing-alongs

Music has been called the universal language of mankind, so why not crank up your favorite kid-friendly tunes for a family sing-along on your road trip. Search for a positive, upbeat travel playlist or create your own, and soak in the sweet sounds of your favorite little voices along the way. Bonus idea: Play a game of car karaoke by packing some instrumental tracks.

Learning Apps

Kids love to play games on phones and tablets, so in the same spirit, why not add in some learning to the fun! Through a variety of engaging preschool learning apps, your little ones can pass the time away with educational-based games that stimulate the mind and senses.

Question Jar

Before you head out, load a jar, bag, or box with some fun questions that each family member can draw from and take turns answering while riding along. You can make the questions related to your trip or destination, or it can be a list of general questions about your favorite things—food, songs, places, etc.
