June 21st marks the first day of summer, and we know how eager little ones are to get outside, meet up with friends, and enjoy the warm weather. If you’re looking for ways to engage your child in learning and play during the summer season, we definitely have a few ideas. Try any of the following tips for a summer that’s as sweet as an ice-cold popsicle on a hot day!

1. Enjoy community activities and events.

Attend summer events in your city or town as your family that aligns with your family’s interests. Many municipalities sponsor special events for kids under ten years of age. Craft activities, friendly competitions, movie nights in the park, and outdoor concerts are just a few of the offerings you can all enjoy together.

2. Build in extended family visits or play dates with friends.

Consider setting up some intentional time to visit and reconnect with those you have been missing throughout the year. Some possible ways to connect once again could include meeting up at a local park for a picnic and some fishing, hosting a board game night, visiting a local garden or zoo, or even putting together a small, casual backyard party. Above all, enjoy your time spent together.

3. Splash and play!

When summer arrives, hot temperatures are sure to follow. Cool down with your family by visiting splash pads, wading pools, a local lake, parks with water elements, or even the ocean. Playing and splashing can entertain little ones for hours, and building sandcastles helps solidify early S.T.E.A.M. skills, including physics, engineering, and art!

4. Try a day camp.

Day camps of all kinds can capture the attention of your little ones this summer. Local zoos, churches, museums, and even record stores all run camps to cater to your child’s skills and interests. Check in with your child’s preschool as well. At The Gardner School, we design Camp Gardner to include activities and games that our campers adore.

5. Take a vacation.

Between online schooling, working from home, and curtailing outside activities, you’re probably ready for a special summer vacation. Pick a location that will provide a mix of family-friendly activities and a few options for the adults in the family as well. If you haven’t seen extended family in a few months, summer is a great time to rent a house in a city or town you’ve been meaning to explore.

The summer months are ideal for all the members of your family to rest, rejuvenate, and celebrate together. We love helping parents provide their kiddos with wonderful learning opportunities over the summer months.
