Recommended Screen Time for Preschoolers: Exploring the Guidelines

Screen time

Determining the right amount of screen time for children takes careful thought, consideration, and creativity. The key is to find balance and create a plan based on what works for your family. The Gardner School is here to help you strike that balance and discover how much screen time is just right for your little one.

Explore the Guidelines

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines allow for some screen time for children younger than two, but parental involvement is essential. The AAP recommends the following for parents and caregivers:

  • Under 18 months: avoid screen time with the exception of video chats.
  • 18 – 24 months: introduce high-quality programming and watch or play together. Children using media on their own at this age is discouraged.
  • 2 – 5 years old: Limit screen use to one hour per day of educational programming. Select media that is interactive, non-violent, and focuses on social skill topics like friendships and sharing
  • After age 6, screen time shouldn’t interfere with important routines such as eating or sleeping.

Not All Screen Time Is Created Equal

Technology is embedded in our everyday lives, and many children are navigating touch screens at early ages. However, technology can provide a valuable entry point for academic skills. By utilizing an interactive app, young learners can be introduced to essential concepts including shapes, colors, letters, and S.T.E.A.M. topics (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).

You can also use screen time as a tool to promote active play for your children. Here are some of our favorite ways to incorporate screen time and technology into active play. A healthy balance can go a long way in helping children enjoy the benefits of technology. It’s important to remember, however, that not all apps are created equal, and choosing the right app can make a difference. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite engaging preschool apps here.

Not every screen media you choose for your child has to be educational, but it should be developmentally appropriate. If they’re engaged, and the topics match their age and stage, using screen time for entertainment is also ok.

How to Limit Screen Time

If you’re worried about your child spending too much time on devices, there are several ways you can manage their exposure.

Many parents praise the OK to Wake Clock for helping their children understand time more concretely. You can use this timer to set a specific length of time for watching television or playing on an iPad. When the clock changes color, it’s time to turn off screens. Using this type of timer can help kids feel empowered to self-regulate. It can also free you from having to watch the clock closely or debate exactly how many minutes have passed.

You could also consider creating a schedule that works for your family. It can include time limits, what kind of devices they can use, and the types of programs or activities they can choose. Take time to notice what shows or apps are your child’s favorites and use them as a guide to introduce new content for them to try.

If you want to limit your child’s screen time, it is important to model moderation with your own screen habits. Children watch and learn from the adults and older children in their lives.

Safety and Screen Time

As your child grows, be sure to continue monitoring, managing, and guiding their use of screens. Developing household rules and revisiting them as your child gets older is a great way to ensure their safety online
