The Gardner School of Ravenswood asked our parent partners for their best ideas for where to take children for outdoor fun near Chicago. Here are their collected greatest hits for the most kid-friendly outdoor activities in Ravenswood.
Chase Park
You can see the unmistakable imprint of local creativity in the decorative mosaic at Chase Park. Children young and older love this park because it offers extensive after-school programming during the school year. Parents love the well-maintained and diverse park features, which include tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, a four-lane track, and a sprawling playground area. Check out the park’s schedule of events to sign up for indoor sporting leagues or regular parents and tots playgroups at the park.
Foster Beach
When warm weather hits in Ravenwood, there’s no better destination for families than the sunny lakeside shore of Foster Beach. Whether your child is an advancing young swimmer, or still learning the basics, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water along the shallow shoreline. A convenient on-site beach house provides nearby restrooms and a washroom for cleaning up at the end of the day.
Ravenswood Farmers Market
This farmer’s market, held outdoors from June to October, is a family favorite for fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious food stands, local wares, and guest vendors every single week. It’s easy to grab breakfast or lunch while supporting local farmers by doing your grocery shopping for the week. Check the Facebook page in advance to find out if the children’s play area is open.

Winnemac Park
Spanning four square city blocks, Winnemac Park is an urban oasis that makes visitors forget they’re in the city. With wide-open lawns, it’s the perfect spot to bring a Frisbee, ball, and glove or pack up the cooler for a weekend picnic. Whatever your mission, don’t forget to check out this park’s central treasure: a three-acre native prairie habitat that attracts butterflies and birds as well as visiting humans.
Gooseberry Park
Don’t let this pocket park’s smaller size fool you. Its renovated playground spans the length of the park and still leaves plenty of room to run. Parents love that the playground structure is accessible and engaging for toddlers and new walkers while also including plenty of higher-level climbing and swinging options for older children. Seamless integration into the neighborhood makes this a great spot for after-school play or a fun pit stop during weekend errands.
