Parents spend a lot of time with kids—preparing and eating meals, bathing, getting dressed, and traveling together in the car, so there are numerous opportunities for shared activities that promote bonding, closeness, and understanding. By setting aside intentional time for specific activities, you can increase the enjoyment your family has when spending time together.

Looking for activity ideas that everyone can enjoy? Here are six surefire tips for choosing family activities that will help you make lasting memories while enjoying quality time together.

1. Tailor the activity to each family member.

If you have more than one child with each having different interests, try to choose an activity that appeals to everyone. In addition to doing activities as a family, make time for each child individually. When parents prioritize solo time with children, you can use that time to check in and reestablish a strong connection.

2. Follow your child’s lead.

While it can be tempting to plan a big event or activity, it’s often the quieter moments that mean the most to children and their parents. If your child has a particular interest or hobby, center your planning around something they love to do. Your willingness to engage in your child’s interests is something they’ll always remember.

3.  Take a class together.

Learning a new skill is a wonderful way to strengthen family bonds. Now, many classes can be taken online, making them even easier to experience. You can do a science experiment, play an instrument, or learn about a favorite animal. As you’re gaining new information together, you’re showing your child that academics can be fun. By having positive experiences, you’re also building a strong foundation to support lifelong learning in your child.

4. Make a craft.

Kids feel a sense of accomplishment and pride when they’re able to build something with their own two hands. Whether they’re tie-dying a shirt in the backyard, making tissue paper butterflies, or racing balloon-powered cars, crafting makes use of children’s problem solving skills and creative abilities.

5. Engage in physical activity.

To increase feelings of closeness and connection, get those endorphins going! Physical exercise can help regulate mood, increase serotonin, and improve motor skills. Movement-based activities don’t have to be complicated or require tons of equipment. Arrange a few lawn chairs, buckets, foam rollers, and other items you have on hand, and you’ve just built your own outdoor obstacle course! Even a simple game of tag can be wildly fun.

6. Take a “family field trip.”

One of the most enjoyable activities in preschool are trips to other locales! Preschoolers love exploring new destinations, even in your hometown. Children’s museums, farmers’ markets, and zoos are always wonderful options. Before you go, consider including a scavenger hunt in the day’s activities. Even a simple list of ten items can make a normal visit into an exciting adventure.
