Family Movies

Sharing a special movie night together can be a wonderful way to cultivate closeness with your little ones. Screen time can be special and engaging if it involves the entire family together. Make a night of it by gathering snacks and drinks, enjoying the film, and then having a short discussion afterward. Not sure what flicks are right for your children? We gathered a collection of some of the best movies for families that you can return to again and again.

Luca

This delightful Pixar flick was only initially released on Disney Plus, although it can now be found on several streaming platforms. It’s a beautiful and engaging story about friendship, differences, and bravery that you won’t want your family to miss. Use it as a springboard to talk about understanding others through empathy and trying new things even when you’re feeling scared.

The Princess and the Frog

Tiana, a girl living in southern Louisiana, dreams of becoming a restaurant owner someday. When she kisses a frog, her unexpected adventures help teach her and her prince about integrity, perseverance, and character. A nice twist on the traditional princess and frog story with an unforgettable soundtrack.

Ratatouille

Remy, the culinarily talented rat, stole hearts when this Pixar film debuted. To reach his dreams, Remy makes an unusual alliance with a young kitchen worker at a famous restaurant. It’s a wonderful story about learning what you can accomplish when you work together.

Toy Story

When Toy Story debuted in 1995, it was on the cutting edge of new animation technology, and it was hailed as an instant classic. Almost thirty years later, the heartwarming themes of friendship and purpose ring just as true in one of the best movies for families. When a fancy new toy arrives in Andy’s playroom, Woody and the old guard have to contend with jealousy and the fear of being replaced. Toy Story (and all the sequels) offer consistently strong storytelling and character development that can help children explore questions about rivalry, teamwork, and friendship.

Curious George

A beloved storybook character makes his silver screen debut in this 2006 feature film. This flick traces the origin story of the Man in the Yellow Hat and his meeting with George, a playful, inquisitive monkey who brings a little bit of mischief and a lot of love to everything he does.

The Mighty Ducks

If you grew up in the 90s, you most likely already have a love for The Mighty Ducks, and so will your children! Friendship is a key factor in this movie, as is teamwork. But watch out for that Knuckle Puck!

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Both parents and children can relate to this movie which sparked many sequels. The plot tells a story of how different types of people can still eventually get along if they work together. This is one of the best movies for families that has stood the test of time.

Frozen

This story of two devoted sisters is a family favorite for the way it depicts sibling relationships and personal development. Idina Menzel brings a transporting energy to the standout single “Let it Go” while the scriptwriters and voice actors turn the traditional princess story on its head.

Inside Out

Little children have big feelings, and Inside Out will help them identify, name, and process all the emotions they might experience. This movie takes place primarily inside the brain of Riley,  adapting to a move to San Francisco. Through emotional moments (Bing Bong!) and well-paced action, adults and children will emerge with a new vocabulary for feelings. It’s a wonderful film to help teach social-emotional concepts.

Soul

Cultivating your child’s natural talents and gifts is a lifelong journey. Soul provides a framework for reflecting on the importance of building a life around doing what you love. When teacher and jazz musician Joe Gardner has an unexpected accident, he’s given the opportunity to identify his “spark”—the passion that makes him unique. Soul is a wonderful way to open up a conversation about finding joy through being yourself.
