Decking the halls in preparation for the holidays is a joyful family activity, but putting up new decor does mean parents need to do a double-check to ensure the decorations are safe for kids. To help you enjoy a safe winter season, review our holiday safety tips for infants and toddlers.
1. Keep Hazards Out of Arm’s Reach
Bright red holly berries, glass ornaments, evergreen garlands, and brightly lit candles bring a festive air to any home. These decorations are also likely to attract the attention of kids, especially those under the age of three. Since infants and toddlers explore their world using their mouths, you want to keep unsafe materials out of their grasp. Hang materials up high and keep objects out of reach. Keep in mind that kids can use available materials to reach for an object they want. Chairs can be used to climb, or tablecloths can be grasped to bring objects closer. While the menorah may look secure in the middle of the table, a tug on the table linens could lead to it tumbling down.
2. Check for Cords
While you’ve likely done a cord check on your current blinds and curtains, holiday decorations involve cords, which can pose a hazard to your child. Strands of lights or electric window decorations may mean you have more cords present than usual. Utilize baby gates to prevent access to cords. You can also use 3M Command hooks or another product to anchor them high on the wall. Supervise children when they’re in a room with cords, even if you believe the cords are not unreachable by the child.
3. Outlaw Outlets
More lights mean more outlets in use and the possibility of overloaded outlets as well. Make sure all unused outlets have study covers that can’t be removed by a curious child. Avoid overloading outlets by using surge protectors to reroute and ground currents.
4. Never Leave a Lit Flame Alone
When possible, invest in decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. Make it a standard practice never to leave a burning flame alone, whether it be a lit menorah or oil lights for Diwali. Remember that even a heating vent can contribute to a fire risk by drying out the needles of any greenery you have. Keep a humidifier in the same room with the Christmas tree to bring some much-needed moisture back into the air.
5. Stick with Simplicity
If you have a curious toddler, give yourself permission to skip some of the decorations that come with the holiday season. Sometimes, it can be easier to eliminate a hazard than try to keep a vigilant watch. If the idea of keeping your child away from the decorations feels difficult, it’s ok to simplify for the year and save expansive decorating for when your child is a bit older.
