4 Tips for Keeping Your Child Healthy During Winter

For parents of young children, the winter weather invites warm mittens, snow angels, and hot chocolate with marshmallows. But, winter can also bring along uninvited cases of the sniffles and sore throats. While parents are always keeping a close eye on their children’s health and wellness during the year, winter is often when bugs tend to spread. Dry, warm air from central heating combined with less time spent outdoors can sometimes lead to an uptick in illnesses for both parents and children. Here are four simple tips for keeping your little ones as healthy as possible throughout the winter months.

1. Encourage Regular Activity and Play

At The Gardner School, we know that regular physical activity can strengthen the immune system’s response to infections and viruses, and new research seems to suggest that’s the case for children as well. Promote healthy bodies and minds by engaging children in regular physical activity and play, even when it’s chilly outside. With the proper gear, winter weather can facilitate fun outdoor play that kids will love. Sledding, making snowballs, or taking a nature walk are all perfect activities for winter weather.

2. Get Plenty of Vitamin D

Even when little hands are covered in big mittens, children can still absorb sunlight through the skin on their faces. A dose of Vitamin D from playing outside can also aid the immune system, shortening the course of an illness. Outdoor activities and outings as a family are a great way to keep everyone healthy. If it really is too chilly to venture outside, consult with your pediatrician to see if pediatric Vitamin D drops are a good alternative to sunshine for your child.

3. Bundle Up Outside

To make cold-weather playtime more appealing and enjoyable, invest in good cold-weather gear to keep tiny noses and fingers toasty and warm. Natural fabrics, like wool, resist water and keep kids warm, and synthetic fleece coat liners can raise core body temps for safe and comfortable winter play.

4. Enjoy Healthy Food Together

For a fun outing and learning opportunity, make an activity out of visiting your local farmers’ market. Kids love looking at the piles of colorful produce, and it makes them more interested in the meals made from ingredients they pick out. In the winter, making fruits and veggies enticing is just as important to promote healthy bodies.

Choose A Preschool That Prioritizes Health and Safety

Selecting a childcare provider takes careful consideration and research. As you weigh the options for your child’s preschool, be sure to ask about physical activity, snacks and meals, and safety and hygiene procedures.
