There’s nothing better than spending a cold winter day nestled indoors, wrapped in a cozy blanket with a good book or favorite show. But if shorter days and lower temperatures leave your family with a case of cabin fever, there are plenty of things to do and places to explore around Cambridge. Plus, there’s always a creative way to make each adventure a learning experience!

Learn to Skate at Canal District Kendall

Head to Canal District Kendall, a professionally maintained outdoor ice rink open yearly from mid-December to mid-March, for a skating adventure. The ice rink offers day admission, seasonal passes, and skate rentals. Just be sure to bundle up to help keep your child healthy if you’re spending time outdoors!

Go Sledding at Cambridge Common

During warmer months, you’ve likely spent time at the Alexander Kemp Playground at Cambridge Common. But the playground also boasts a small hill that’s perfect for young children who are new to sledding. As a bonus, your child will improve their gross motor skills, activate their vestibular system, build a strong body, and enjoy many more benefits of playing outdoors—even during the winter!

Build a Snowman in Harvard Yard

Do you want to build a snowman? If you have a preschooler, chances are the answer is a resounding “yes!” Take them to Harvard Yard, the 25-acre green space in the heart of the university’s campus to create the perfect snowman. You can make your creations even better with a few of our favorite cold-weather toys for hands-on learning, including a snow painting kit.

Curl up with a Good Book from Cambridge Public Library

Visit Cambridge Public Library for storytimes and singalongs created with young children in mind. Music has many benefits for young children, and enjoying it at the library also provides an opportunity to check out several new children’s books to read with your preschooler.

Explore Boston Children’s Museum

Stay warm indoors and shake out the wintertime wiggles at Boston Children’s Museum.  Here, your child can discover their inner scientist, artist, or engineer through creative exhibits that span three floors. The exhibits are also full of chances for hands-on play, a child-sized construction zone, an art lab, a workbench, a performance stage, and more.
