It’s fun to share special experiences with your child and see the world through their eyes–especially when you get to explore together in your own city! Minneapolis offers many activities that are great for families, and we’ve crafted a special itinerary with a blend of adventures for you to choose from. Because young children thrive on routine, we’ve arranged the day to mimic your preschooler’s weekday schedule, including morning learning time, lunch, rest time, and active play in the afternoon.

So, grab the diaper bag and hit the town! You can use our vetted guide to create a memorable day with your children in Minneapolis,

Morning (9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.)

Morning is usually the best time for activities that require more calm and focused behavior. The Minnesota Children’s Museum and Como Park Zoo are great for experiential learning combined with movement and creative thinking. We recommend either of these activities before that afternoon nap!

  • Minnesota Children’s Museum
Start your day with a visit to the Minnesota Children’s Museum. If you’ve ever visited this museum, you know there is always something new to see and experience! Great for all ages, the museum has indoor and outdoor spaces that allow children to immerse themselves in adventure based on their own interests. Check out the “underwater” adventure based on a real shipwreck, or head to the sensory play space created for children ages three and under.

(Hot Tip: Check out the museum’s Playful Parenting blog for some great articles about incorporating play into everyday activities with your child!)

Lunch Time (11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)

After a busy morning, your family will be ready for a filling lunch. Depending on your schedule, you can opt for a sit-down meal or grab a quick bite to go at either of these spots!

  • The Market At Malcolm Yards
This Minneapolis food hall is perfect for all types of eaters. From tacos and dumplings to pizza and po’ boys, The Market At Malcolm Yards is a family-friendly option where everyone can find something they love. And if you’re rushing to get home in time for naps, you can order ahead online and grab something to go.

  • Midtown Global Market
For a full sensory experience, check out Midtown Global Market! You can grab a flavorful lunch from one of the market’s diverse restaurants and then walk around to explore the many shops displaying handmade crafts from all over the world! The market also hosts live music, festivals, and other events showcasing and celebrating various cultures.

Afternoon (1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

Preschool afternoons usually include nap time followed by child-directed learning and active play. To keep that rhythm on the weekends, we recommend one of these great spots to close out your adventure-filled day depending on which activity is closest to your home!

  • Minnehaha Falls Park
Get outside for a peaceful escape and some fresh air at Minnehaha Falls Park and Playground. The park is huge, and with a majestic 53-foot waterfall, you’ll forget you’re still inside the city! There are multiple playgrounds, a splash pad, a wading pool, and a walking path that make this a perfect spot to spend part of a day with your children in Minneapolis.

  • Mall of America
