Top Winter Activities for Families in Braintree

children playing in the winter

We spend a lot of time with preschoolers, and one thing they usually have in common is a love of exploring and spending time outdoors. As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, it’s the perfect time to plan cozy indoor adventures and seasonal outdoor favorites.

Fortunately, we’ve found plenty of ways for preschoolers and their families to enjoy Braintree this winter—and we’ve ensured each experience offers opportunities for meaningful learning!

Learn to Skate and Swim at William A. Connell Swimming Pool and Skating Rink

Located just down the road in Weymouth, Connell Memorial Rink same-offers day admission, seasonal passes, and skate rentals. There is also an indoor pool that is open year-round. Between skating and swimming, there is enough here to easily keep your child active all day!

Think Pink at Marylou’s News

The place with the “best coffee in town” may also be the best place to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream. Duck inside the all-pink Marylou’s News for your favorite beverage and take a moment to enjoy a special treat with your child. It may just start a new wintertime family tradition!

Head for the Hills near East Middle School

Our friends at Boston Moms recommend several sledding hills around Braintree, including one behind East Middle School. This small, wide hill is a popular spot for winter fun. Sledding also activates your child’s vestibular system and helps them build physical strength. There are so many benefits of playing outdoors—even during the winter!

Jump Around at Kids World

Stay warm indoors while shaking out the wintertime wiggles at Kids World inside South Shore Sports Center. Children ages 1-6 can discover age-appropriate bounce houses, kids’ coasters, toys, and games. They’ll have a chance to connect with other children, develop motor skills, and engage in imaginative play.

Find Seasonal Reads at Thayer Public Library

Visit Thayer Public Library for educational books about snow, winter animals, special holidays, and more. The library also offers a wide selection of events, materials, and services designed specifically for children. Plus, since reading has many benefits for young minds, we love the library’s dedicated children’s room and play space that encourages an appreciation for books.

Snuggle up with a New Friend from Build-A-Bear

After a long day of winter fun, the best place to be is snuggled up with your favorite stuffed animal. Head to Build-A-Bear in South Shore Plaza to create a seasonal, snow-themed friend, complete with tiny sherpa boots to keep their paws extra warm. In addition to providing coziness and comfort, stuffed animals also can help encourage imaginative play in preschoolers.
