Setting goals with your child

Goal setting isn’t just for adults or older kids, even preschoolers can benefit from learning how to set and achieve goals! While their goals may look a little different, the process of setting them can help teach children valuable skills such as focus, patience, and problem-solving. Goal setting provides a good foundation for your child as their confidence and personality develop!

Imagine the pride your preschooler feels when they master zipping up their coat for the first time or stacking blocks higher than ever. Those moments may seem small to us, but to a young child, they are monumental. By introducing goal setting in everyday activities, parents and teachers can nurture that sense of accomplishment. This can help your child see that effort and persistence lead to success.

Why Goal Setting Matters for Preschoolers

At this age, children are discovering their independence. They want to be able to “do it themselves” and that’s a great time to introduce simple goals. These goals don’t need to be long-term or elaborate. In fact, the smaller and simpler they are, the better! Whether it’s learning to button their coat up, remembering to put their toys away, or being kind to a new friend, preschool-friendly goals can have a lasting impact.

When children practice goal-setting, they develop critical cognitive and emotional skills. Here are a few examples of preschooler-friendly goals:

  • Independence Goals: Putting on shoes, brushing teeth, cleaning up toys
  • Learning Goals: Counting to 20, identifying colors, learning new letters
  • Social Goals: Taking turns, using kind words, helping a friend in class

Setting goals encourages a growth mindset, which is the belief that abilities can be developed through effort, practice, and hard work. And remember, the goal doesn’t have to be a big one to be meaningful. Even small wins, like trying a new food or finding the right piece for a puzzle build your preschooler’s confidence!
