Immersive outdoor experiences are an essential aspect of childhood development. Whether it’s a structured outdoor camp or a meandering day in the park, children need room to run, jump, climb, touch, and investigate their environment! To get the most out of your next adventure, check out our favorite spots for the best kid-friendly outdoor activities in Denver:
Westlands Park
It’s easy to see why the expertly-designed Westlands Park has accumulated so many awards, including the Top Playground designation in the metro area. Westlands features pristine courts and sporting fields for open-ended play, and three playground areas designed for children of all ages. With 28 acres to explore, there is something new to discover at Westlands with every visit.
Expo Park Disc Golf Course
This sprawling, expansive park is a favorite for humans of all ages and their canine companions. Try out a game of frisbee golf on the best course in town, or take the family bike crew to the network of paved trails that web around the park’s greenery and ponds. Young children can explore the playground or even swing their first baseball bat on one of the park’s ball fields.
Tommy Davis Park
This serene 12-acre park is tucked right into the middle of the city, making it the perfect place for parents and preschoolers to unwind together at the end of a busy day. Paved walking trails surround a beautiful lake, and locals love to keep tabs on families of geese and ducks on the water. Children have plenty of room to play in the park’s open, grassy areas, or they can head over to the playground to slide, swing, and climb.
Denver Zoo
Whether your child has a passion for lions or llamas, elephants or otters, you’ll see their eyes light up with wonder at a visit to the Denver Zoo. Watch penguins dive and swim through clear windows at Penguin Point, or try to catch the attention of the sweet, slow tree-dwellers at the zoo’s brand new sloth tree! When school’s out, Safari Camps feature special experiences with animals and teach important principles of conservation and environmental care.
Denver Botanic Gardens (York Street)
This local gem is a no-brainer family favorite. In addition to its stunning variety of themed gardens and carefully conserved flora, the botanic gardens also contain a 3-acre children’s garden showcasing the unique ecosystems of Colorado. With interactive elements at every turn, parents love how the children’s garden promotes hands-on learning and immersive play through accessible, engaging design.
Washington Park
At a whopping 155 acres, this is one of Denver’s largest parks and a clear local favorite. Enjoy the pristine gardens, explore the biking and walking trails, or set out on beautiful Smith Lake for an afternoon in a paddle boat. Whatever your mood, this is a perfect destination for exploration, adventure, or just relaxing in the Colorado sun.
