Keeping Cool While Learning

Summer is the perfect time for hands-on learning, and at The Gardner School, we turn up creativity while keeping things cool, literally! Our summer sensory play experiences offer exciting ways for children to explore, discover, and stay refreshed during warm-weather months. Whether it’s ice painting, water tables, or frozen treasure hunts, these activities engage the senses and support meaningful developmental growth.

Sensory Play Supports Whole-Child Development

Sensory play is more than just fun; it’s foundational to early learning. When children manipulate textures, temperatures, and materials, they build neural connections that support everything from fine motor skills to language development. Sensory bins filled with water beads, kinetic sand, or colored ice cubes offer a wide variety of experiences that encourage exploration and curiosity.

At The Gardner School, teachers plan summer sensory activities with intention. A bin of soapy water becomes a science experiment about bubbles. Melting ice reveals hidden objects that inspire storytelling and imaginative play. Water tables provide opportunities for measurement, sorting, and problem-solving. These playful moments are carefully designed to support cognitive development and encourage creative thinking.

Summer sensory play also helps children manage emotions and practice self-regulation. The calming nature of sensory experiences, like scooping, pouring, and squeezing can help children feel grounded and focused. Teachers guide students through these experiences, asking open-ended questions that spark conversation and reflection.

Creative Sensory Activities with Purpose

In addition to indoor sensory stations, we bring the fun outside! Water painting on sidewalks, bubble-blowing relays, and sand play offer outdoor outlets for learning while enjoying the sunshine safely. We ensure that all activities are developmentally appropriate and aligned with our curriculum goals.
