Healthy Habits For Little Hands: How To Prevent Illness In Preschool Classrooms

Family Living | January 3, 2025

Preschool classrooms are bustling with energy, imagination, and sometimes also, germs. Young children are still learning how to practice personal hygiene, making it crucial for parents, teachers, and caregivers to help them learn to foster healthy habits! Teaching your preschooler simple yet effective hygiene routines can significantly reduce the spread of illness and keep everyone in the class feeling their best. Here are a few essential strategies to promote healthy habits for little hands in preschool.

  1. Proper Handwashing Techniques
    • Step 1: Wet hands with clean, running water.
    • Step 2: Apply a generous amount of soap and lather for at least 30 seconds (you can encourage your child to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice to time it right).
    • Step 3: Scrub all the parts of the hands, including the backs, between fingers, and under fingernails.
    • Step 4: Rinse thoroughly with running water.
    • Step 5: Dry hands using a clean paper towel or air dryer.
  1. Encouraging Proper Coughing and Sneezing Etiquette
    • Cough or sneeze into their elbow (the “vampire sneeze”).
    • Use a tissue to blow their nose and discard it immediately.
    • Washing hands after sneezing, coughing, or blowing their nose!
  1. Sanitizing Shared Toys
    • Daily cleaning of frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, tables, tours, and play equipment.
    • Routine disinfection of toys – especially those that children put in their mouths.
  1. Staying Home When Sick
    • Children need to stay home if they’re sick!
    • It’s beneficial for everyone, at home and in the classroom, for sick children to rest and recover before coming back to class.

By encouraging a culture of cleanliness and personal responsibility, preschool classrooms can become healthier spaces for learning and growth! Simple routines, communication with families, and fun, child-friendly hygiene practices can make a big difference. When little hands stay clean, little minds remain ready to learn!
