Growing up in Boston definitely has its benefits: wonderful museums and educational institutions, tons of green spaces to romp and play, a great public transit system, and plenty of activities for families to enjoy. In fact, Boston has a goal of becoming one of the most family-friendly cities in the nation. The Gardner School of Cambridge is excited to join this special community. To support our future families, here are our ideas for a perfect family-friendly day in Cambridge!

Morning (9:00 – 11:00 am)

Morning is usually the best time for activities that require more calm and focused behavior (e.g., circle time, themed group activities, music and movement, art, and reading). With this in mind, we’ve chosen activities that match morning energy levels.

  • Franklin Park Zoo
The perfect match for your early risers is a morning visit to the Franklin Park Zoo. If you arrive early enough, you may even see zookeepers bringing out a morning meal to the diurnal animals. You can also attend a Keeper Chat on a favorite animal or enjoy one of the many festivals and events held at the Zoo!

Lunch Time (11:30 am – 12:30 pm)

After a busy morning, your family will be ready for a filling lunch. Depending on your schedule, you can choose a sit-down meal or a lighter, quick bite!

  • Mothership
After your Zoo adventure, it’s time to visit the Mothership! This beloved Boston eatery opens at 11:00 a.m. for lunch, and the family-friendly environment will keep hungry children happy! The kids’ menu features fun games to play and all the under-10 classics that your crew will love.

Afternoon (1:00 – 4:00 pm)

Preschool afternoons usually include nap time followed by child-directed learning and active play, so we recommend these great spots to close out your adventure-filled day.

  • Afternoon: Backyartists
This process-based art studio encourages your little ones to get creative and never stop exploring! Started by two early childhood educators, Backyartists focuses on exploring materials, not worrying about the end product, and building fine motor skills and confidence. You can sign your crew up for weekly classes and weekend pop-up playgroups, or host your child’s next birthday party at Backyartists Art Studio. For the latest updates follow @Backyartists on Instagram and Facebook or visit their website to sign up for their newsletter.

  • Dinnertime: Puritan & Company
Parents need great meals too, and this upscale Cambridge favorite serves incredible food for all ages. While the environs are classy and the aesthetic is gorgeous, it’s famously child-friendly, so your family will feel right at home.
