Few things feel better than having your hard work noticed and admired by your loved ones, and your preschooler enjoys it just as much as you do! Children thrive in an environment where their accomplishments are seen and valued. Knowing that the adults in their lives see the ways they are growing and improving gives preschoolers a strong sense of connection and confidence about what they’re able to achieve.

Celebrating your preschooler’s milestones with your child doesn’t require a big investment of time, effort, or money. Bright smiles and positive expressions from you can make a big impact and a little special attention can go a long way. Here are a few ideas for how you can notice and celebrate developmental milestones and important events in your child’s life:

1. Take a Photo

Did your preschooler finally master buttoning his own shirt? Or complete a project that took her several tries? No matter the occasion, you can take a second to capture that beautiful, proud smile in a photograph. You can print out a copy to put on the refrigerator. Every time they see the picture, it will remind your child that they’re capable of accomplishing new tasks.

2.  Share the News

It’s wonderful to share your child’s successes with family and friends who love them. Celebrating with our friends and family is a great way to recognize achievements big and small. So start a video call, phone a friend, or drop by a grandparent’s house for a much-appreciated hug! Your child will know that you’ve noticed all the ways they’re growing.

3.  Give a Gift

Gifts could be your child’s love language. When you see them achieve something great, a small token of appreciation can make a big difference. If you need a few ideas, our TGS Recommends page is a collection of our teachers’ favorite books, games, and toys for children. You can also give your child a short congratulatory note if they are starting to read or a special treat. Milestones like potty training, drinking from a cup, or recognizing a letter of the alphabet can all be celebrated with a book about that topic. (Plus, you’ll have extra fun snuggling up for “one more” re-read at bedtime!)

 4. Choose Your Own Adventure

If your child has been working really hard to master their letters or cut in a straight line, consider letting them pick a way to celebrate their accomplishment when they finally succeed. It could be anything – a trip to a favorite playground, a visit to an ice cream shop, playing a game with you, or getting to choose a favorite meal for dinner. There are so many things that can acknowledge your child’s milestones.

Celebrate Your Preschooler’s Milestones Together

No matter how you choose to honor your child when they reach a milestone, the important thing is that you are celebrating together. Their internal motivation is bolstered by your positive attention and affection. Keep an eye out for the next opportunity to connect with your preschooler: you’ll soon notice that they are achieving new milestones all the time!
