It’s easy to see why U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Denver as one of Colorado’s top places to live. With a walkable downtown and more than 200 parks, the Mile High City has miles of fun! The Gardner School picked our favorite attractions to create a summer bucket list with preschoolers and young children in mind. We hope you will create lasting memories while learning and playing your way through Denver.

Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus

There is much to do and to learn at the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus. Here, preschoolers can become firefighters, veterinarians, chefs, and market cashiers in the permanent exhibit. Stop by for hands-on cooking and craft classes, then head outside to explore Joy Park. Your preschooler will love riding on the zipline, playing in the river, and digging in the sand.

Clear Creek Trail

The Clear Creek Trail is a family-friendly—and free—option for enjoying Colorado’s beautiful summer weather. A paved trail offers smooth terrain for strollers and young hikers to navigate easily. After your nature walk, take the family for a pizza in Downtown Golden and explore this 1850s gold-rush-era town.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science

Help your preschooler discover the natural world around them at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Many exhibits are designed for visitors of all ages to explore, and parents and children alike will be in awe of the larger-than-life dinosaurs on display. Head to the Discovery Zone for hands-on learning where young children can look, discover, make, and share—all in the name of science.

Denver Trolley

All aboard the Denver Trolley! Take a ride on this well-preserved, historic piece of Denver’s 20th-century electric rail transit system. Families can take the trolley to multiple stops around the city, including preschooler favorites like the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus, Downtown Aquarium, and even Elitch Gardens.

Denver Zoo

Let your preschooler show their wild side at the Denver Zoo. Home to animals from around the world, the zoo is the perfect place to learn about exciting wildlife and unique habitats. For a truly hands-on experience, book one of their Up-Close Looks to check out the animal hospital or meet some giraffes. And don’t forget: your littles can explore The Zofnass Barclay Family Nature Play Trail on select Tuesday and Saturday mornings.

Downtown Aquarium

Have an under-the-sea adventure at Downtown Aquarium. Children can learn about aquatic life, ride on the sea-themed carousel, and see a movie in 4-D. Plan your visit around lunch or dinner and enjoy the aquarium’s restaurant. Since all the tables are surrounded by large tanks, you can dine among sea creatures and even see a few mermaids floating by!

Elitch Gardens

Adventurous families can find rides for even the youngest thrill seekers at Elitch Gardens. Enjoy the view from atop the 100-foot-tall Ferris wheel, ride the traditional 85-year-old carousel, and introduce your preschooler to an essential childhood experience: riding in spinning teacups. On a hot day, cool off in Barefootin’ Bay near the S.S. Sea Witch. This special water park for younger children features mini slides, sprayers, and a giant tipping bucket.

Mount Falcon Park

Take advantage of Colorado’s incredible landscape at Mount Falcon Park. A 1.7-mile “Turkey Trot Trail” is reserved solely for hikers and equestrians, while the remaining trails are open for multi-purpose use. You’ll enjoy stopping for views of Denver, the Red Rocks, and the mountains. The park is even stroller-friendly to better accommodate families and their youngest hikers.
