Top 10 Signs You’re a Parent in Louisville, KY

Family Living | March 23, 2023

Louisville is known around the country for many reasons. It’s where the fastest two minutes in sports capture the attention of the nation every year. It’s the birthplace of both America’s famous baseball bat and the greatest boxer in history. As the city continues to grow, young families are realizing just how wonderful Louisville is to raise a family.

But how do you know if you’re really a parent in Louisville? To help you out, The Gardner School of Louisville put together a list of some of the most classic Louisville attractions, traditions, and locations. If you’ve been to all of them, you’re definitely a parent in Louisville. If you still have a few to visit, consider this blog your guidebook to exploring the city!

1. If your child has specifically requested a Hot Brown or a slice of Derby Pie, you are probably a parent in Louisville.

As most local parents know, nothing beats the greatest open-faced sandwich of all time, and who can resist a slice of heaven in the form of an extra-special pecan pie?

2. You spend weekends at the Louisville Zoo or the Kentucky Science Center.

There’s a reason the Zoo sees over 1.4 million unique visitors each year. It houses over 1,700 animals, which means you can spend hours meeting so many different animal friends. Or, if you have a budding STEM learner in your household, the rotating exhibits and activities will engage them as they’re learning.

3. You know that the KFC Yum! Center is a sports complex and not a fast food restaurant.

While out-of-town visitors might imagine an arena filled with chicken nuggets, locals know it’s the spot for basketball and great concerts. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the food options at the Yum are legitimately great as well. And speaking of basketball:

4. Basketball is more important to your family than football.

Whether you cheer for the Cards or the Cats, Louisville is one of the few cities in the Southeast where the inhabitants are already looking forward to basketball when August rolls around.

5.  You’ve walked the Big Four Bridge.

One of the most memorable pedestrian bridges in the country, the Big Four connects Louisville, Kentucky, and Jeffersonville, Indiana. With stunning views of the Ohio River, the bridge is a great spot for a family-friendly stroll.

6. You’ve taken a spin on the Louisville Wheel.

The Louisville Wheel is a 200-foot tall Ferris wheel at the Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville. With stunning views of the city and river, you’ve taken your family for a ride on the wheel to make special memories.

7. You’ve taken your family to Louisville Waterfront Park.

With its scenic views, playgrounds, and trails, the Louisville Waterfront Park is a great place to take the family for a fun-filled day. Bring a picnic along and you’ll have all the ingredients for a perfect family weekend.

8. You’ve been to the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory.

This museum and factory is dedicated to the history of the Louisville Slugger, the iconic baseball bat used by some of the greatest players in the game. Until you have a picture of your children climbing on the Big Glove and a personalized bat hanging in their rooms, are you really a Louisville family?

9. You’ve been to the Kentucky Derby Museum.

This one is a given, but we have to mention it. The Kentucky Derby Museum is a must-see for visitors of all ages (and a rite of passage for Louisville little ones.) With interactive exhibits and a variety of artifacts, the museum provides a fascinating look at one of America’s greatest sporting events.
