Celebrate the Week of the Young Child

We’ve been celebrating the Week of the Young Child all week!

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration brought to us by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The Gardner Schools participated throughout the week by following the celebrations of Music Monday, Taco Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday and Family Friday. Here’s a little preview of what our preschoolers, toddlers and infants did.

Music Monday, April 11

Through music, children develop math, language, and literacy skills while having fun and staying active! This year’s song was “One Love” by Aaron Nigel Smith. Kids practiced clapping, drumming and stomping their feet to the beat of the music. Numbers were also added into the mix for a fun counting lesson.

Taco Tuesday, April 12

This fun food-themed day was more than just chips and salsa. Did you know that cooking helps establish math, science and literacy skills. Tuesday lunch of course included tacos! Children were then encouraged to create their own taco recipes and learn to measure ingredients.

Work Together Wednesday, April 13

Each Spring many of our schools plant their own garden and this year is no different! Our students learned about the life cycle of a plant by planting seeds and caring for them as they prepare for this years harvest. Some of our schools also planned many fun outdoor activities like a a bounce house!

Students were also encouraged to work together in the block center organizing blocks by size and building structures together. This allowed our students to work on math and science skills, while also developing social skills, which are incredibly significant for healthy habits and behavior.

Artsy Thursday, April 14

The Gardner School always encourages creativity in our students! With both structured and open-ended plans, kids develop creative, social and fine motor skills. They learn to make choices, use their imagination and create with their hands. The Gardner School took our Artsy Thursday outdoors for inspiration!

Family Friday, April 15

Young childhood education for your little ones wouldn’t be an option it if weren’t for you — their parents and guardians! Family is at the center of support for the education of growing infants and preschoolers. Our students shared pictures and family stories at school. Schools also had a photo booth set up in for fun, family photos!

You should always celebrate your children’s early learning success, making every week the Week of the Young Child — but thankfully we had an official week to observe all of their achievements!
