Fireworks are incredible to experience: the brilliant lights and reverberating booms create special memories for children and adults alike. With the 4th of July just around the corner, your family may want to celebrate with fireworks safely. To do so, here are a few firework safety tips to consider when you’re planning your Independence Day events:

1. Leave it to the Professionals

Many neighborhoods, counties, and cities have professional fireworks shows on the 4th. These can be spectacular events because of the quality and quantity of the fireworks on display, as well as the community atmosphere they create. Often popcorn, cotton candy, and other snacks are for sale. Best of all? These events are almost always free! You can put safety first by letting the professionals run the nighttime displays. Just be sure to bring the pop-up chairs and a beverage!

2. Consider Alternative Lights

Sparklers are definitely cool, but they’re also hot! Sparklers can reach temperatures of 1200 degrees and are definitely something to keep little arms away from. Having alternatives to traditional sparklers can be a fun way to create colorful experiences on the 4th! Glowsticks, confetti cannons, silly string, clappers, bubble machines, and flashing LED lights that change colors are all safe options for the six and under crowd.

3. Set Clear Guidelines

Many families have traditions of gathering together and celebrating with fireworks at home or other traditional sites, like a local waterfront. Be sure to clearly communicate to your child that for their own safety, the fireworks must be handled by an adult. That also means storing your fireworks in a cool and dry place and supervising their use at all times. Also, be on the lookout for curious cats or dogs. Make sure all pets are safely inside the home before lighting any fireworks!

4. Model Firework Safety for Your Preschooler

It’s important for both adults and children to follow directions. You can demonstrate this concept by reading instructions carefully and verbally explaining the precautions you’re using. You can explain that you’re carefully aiming the fireworks away from people, animals, vehicles, and homes, you’re wearing eye protection, and you’re choosing to discard any “duds” rather than re-lighting them. You can also avoid tall grass or leaves and keep a bucket of water nearby. Children learn by watching others, so modeling responsible use is a wonderful way to teach safety protocols.
