Early Childhood Development | June 5, 2017

In today’s technology-saturated world, there really is an app for just about anything. While many apps help adults with productivity, organization, insight, and more, children can also benefit from learning apps that enhance growth and development. The Gardner School is proud to be a preschool focused on technology, and we recently explored the App Store to compile a list of some of the highest-rated and reviewed learning apps for preschoolers. If you’re hoping to continue your child’s learning experience beyond the classroom, here are ten popular apps to explore together.

Regularly ranked as the leading children’s learning app, ABCmouse offers a comprehensive digital learning resource for children ages 2–7. With 5,000 learning games and activities, this app allows children to read books, play games, listen to music, watch videos and more. The app is designed by teachers and learning experts to help your child enhance the development they experience at school.

Using 26 action verbs to help toddlers learn ABCs, the AlphaTots Alphabet app for iPhone and iPad allows preschoolers to build robots, dig for treasure, and even zap alien spaceships, all while learning the uppercase and lowercase letters and their sounds.

AniMatch: Animal Pairs and Sounds Matching Game

Designed for both iPhone and iPad, AniMatch is fun for both kids and parents. An excellent tool for helping children develop concentration, memory, and cognitive skills, the app also teaches them what sounds animals make. Kids can play AniMatch on their own, but it’s even more fun when parents take turns and play the game along with them! The simplicity of the AniMatch app design makes it easy to start playing upon download. Perfect for ages 2 to 6, the app can also be entertaining for children as young as 11-month old.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Play at Home with Daniel

Kids familiar with the popular PBS cartoon, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, are sure to love exploring bedtime, bath time, going to the doctor, and more at Daniel Tiger’s house with this engaging and interactive app. Preschoolers will also enjoy expressing their feelings through the app’s “Feel the Music” feature.

Fans of this app also recommend its accompanying “Doodle Math: Numbers” app.

Elmo World and You

Sesame Street’s most popular character makes learning fun in this collection of “appisodes” that teach preschoolers about the world around them through creativity and play. Perfect for ages 2 to 5, as children interact with Elmo in this app, they can practice school readiness skills like object recognition, self-control, and using the imagination to create art.
